Bermuda's culture is one that is based around her people. Many Bermudians are of European and African descent. Bermuda is also a British Overseas Territory and it is quite evident in our customs. Many Bermudians are very conservative people who value family, religion, sports & recreation. "Good morning!" or "Good afternoon!" are usual and expected polite ways to initiate conversation - even when asking for directions. The Bermuda Gombey Dancers are a traditional display of our native music that is said to be derived from West Africa.
Traditional Bermudian cuisine consists of a blending between English and Portuguese descent. This includes local seafood dishes prepared with ingredients such as wahoo, rockfish, codfish, potatoes or rice and peas. Desserts are generally centered around our loquat fruit, seasonal berries and bananas.
